What season are you in?
At 32 years old, earning millions, Sahil Bloom had a crisis of conscience and left his job in finance to pursue an entirely different career path. Around the same time, his wife fell pregnant and stepped away from a highly successful position in the competitive fashion industry. They each faced public scrutiny for their choices in what was already no doubt an uncertain time.
“For me and my wife the idea that this was just one season among many; that we could prioritise certain things and maintain others was deeply empowering.”
When considering the seasons of life, Bloom says to consider the mentality of surfers riding waves. “They fully enjoy this wave with the wisdom and awareness that there are aways more waves coming. They know they don’t need to ride every single wave that will come their way. They are aware that patience and proper positioning are all that matters for when the next wave inevitably comes. They know that the only way to live is to put themselves out in the water because they can’t catch any waves sitting on the shore.”

There will be seasons of growth and maintenance in each season of your life. Growing your career or growing your family. Growing your wealth or growing your health and wellness.
We can be all things – but not at once. I left my corporate lawyer era to become a stay at home mum. I have no doubt that if – in either of those eras – I viewed them as transitional and temporary seasons, I would have found each easier to navigate and tolerate when the times were tough. Likewise, I would have taken advantage of each of them, aware of the impermanence – more time at professional development opportunities and drinks nights followed by more time reading Hair Maclary without also refreshing my phone.
Viewing your life in seasons makes it easier to weather storms, know when to toil and enjoy the harvest.
